Working with a Edwardian terrace in Redfern, the key ambition of the project is to construct a rear studio to ‘bookend’ the house and garden, flexible in use to provide the following functional requirements for the owners:

  • Work-from-home space
  • Informal living area
  • Granny flat for guest accommodation
  • Function and performance space, with access from the rear pedestrian right-of-way
  • Supporting ensuite and kitchenette/bar facilities

Due to the small footprint, the spaces are arranged over two levels with living and sleeping spaces downstairs, and working spaces upstairs connecting the rear laneway. The workspace is conceived as a bridge to allow a large double-height void space to the living area below.

The studio is clad externally with dark charred vertical timber cladding, creating a recessive backdrop to the courtyard landscaping. In contrast, the interior is light in colour but heavy in texture, with rough-cast render applied to the perimeter walls and ceiling, creating a womb-like interior volume.

Fluted boundary walls draw the eye upwards, and volumetric skylights act as colour drops to the interior, picking up on the deep greens and burgundy colours associated with the original terrace. The rough-cast render creates a sense of mass, and unifies the playful geometry.

The bridge is constructed with timber and expresses it’s structure, with light balustrades that act as ribbons connecting the bridge upstairs to the internal stair downstairs.

The new studio is conceived as a beautiful small object sitting in the garden, becoming the focal point between the courtyard and the main house, and generating visual layering through to the rear right-of-way, elongating the sense of space.
